About this proposed gas project
In January 2022, Blue Energy made an application for an Environmental Authority to drill 530 gas wells over three proposed petroleum lease areas spanning over 1000ha in the Moranbah/Glenden area of the Bowen Basin.
EnvA was very concerned about this project on the basis that if approved:
- this project would set the groundwork for the expansion of gas wells and gas pipelines throughout the Bowen Basin, and
- the disturbance would significantly impact on biodiversity and groundwater, and the operation would result in greenhouse gas emissions further fuelling accelerated climate change.
Despite receiving a number of objections from the community and conservation sector, Queensland’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation provided Blue with an approval in March 2023.
