We have to stop opening up new coal and gas !
Fossil fuel (coal and gas) facts:
⭐ Fossil fuels are the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.
⭐ They account for nearly 90% of global CO2 emissions.
⭐ Gas is mostly methane, which has 80% more warming power than CO2.
⭐ Both coal and gas operations ‘leak’ methane when the coal seam is disturbed adding even
more emissions into the atmosphere.
🔥 These emissions result in more frequent and severe weather events like floods, fires, droughts and heatwaves. 🔥
Other impacts caused by coal and gas:
⭐ Huge areas of land is cleared which impacts on our threatened wildlife, agricultural and removes a vital carbon sink.
⭐ They threaten our our waterways and groundwater. Coal mining operations wash
toxic runoff into waterways and both coal and gas drains and contaminates our
groundwater.
🐨 This leaves a lasting scar on the landscape and our environment. 🐨
We already have enough approved coal and gas to meet our domestic needs AND the needs for our international trading partners for decades to come.
Australia and Queensland have plans and legislated emission reduction targets aligned with international agreements to keep temperature increases to 1.5 – 2oC. These targets won’t be met if we keep opening up new fossil fuels.
We do not need any new coal and gas.
EnvA campaign against new coal and gas
Mostly our campaign work involves writing detailed submissions on as many new or expanding Central Queensland fossil projects. You can read our past submissions here.
For some of the projects we take the next step of writing or phoning decision-makers, or taking the story to the media to bring further attention to the polluting project. We are also taking legal action against the approval of the Blue Energy coal seam gas project!
Here are links to some of the projects we are working on and some of the past wins (just two of them, but hopefully more to come!)
