Koalas, gliders and coal
One of the recurring themes in environmental impact assessments for new and expanding coal mine proposals in Central Queensland, is that nearly all of them will significantly impact on koalas and greater gliders. In 2022, both these very iconic Aussie animals have been reclassified from vulnerable to the endangered. This is not a great path to be going down!
EnvA, with the help of other amazing conservation groups and scientists, conducted a research project to document the facts and figures. We strongly believe that the cumulative impacts of clearing for coal mines are not consistent with the government’s environmental targets of no new extinctions.

Living Wonders
The Environment Council of Central Queensland (ECoCeQ) have asked the federal Environment Minister to reconsider the assessment of 19 coal and gas proposals on the basis that climate change impacts on more than the local wildlife, their habitats and waterways.
Historically, only impacts close to the fossil fuel development have been considered when assessing the impacts on matters of national environmental significance. Environmental Justice Australia, on behalf of ECoCeQ succesfully argued that the climate change impacts of fossil fuel developments impact far more widely than just the local area.
